When students reach the secondary school, i.e. Class IX, they will have the opportunity to opt either for the ICSE curriculum or the Cambridge IGCSE (Cambridge O Level ICE) curriculum, with the qualification exams for both being held at the end of Class X.
The ICSE curriculum, apart from strengthening the student’s education base, is designed to develop the student’s capacity to reason, judge, evaluate and decide. The emphasis is on learning concepts and applying them rather than learning by rote. The curriculum also lays special importance on English, and expects a high standard from the students in written as well as spoken English.
The curriculum allows the school freedom to experiment with new ideas and practices so that it may continuously evolve and improve.
In the ICSE board examination, students are required to sit for seven subjects, viz. English, Second Language (Marathi as per the new rules in Maharashtra), Social Studies, Environmental Education, Mathematics, Science and either Computer Applications or Economics Applications.
Detailed information on the syllabuses of the various subjects may be obtained from the Council’s website: www.cisce.org / www.cisce.in.
Cambridge IGCSE is an international curriculum that develops students’ skills in creative thinking, enquiry and problem solving. It provides them with excellent preparation to enrol for the Cambridge International A and AS Levels, which are internationally recognized qualifications and make it easier for the students to pursue higher education from an international university anywhere in the world. Good Cambridge IGCSE grades also count towards entry into universities and colleges around the world.
Cambridge IGCSE offers students a flexible course of study that gives them the freedom to select the subjects that are right for them. In order to prepare themselves for further education, many students follow a broad and balanced curriculum with syllabuses from the following groups:
The courses differ for each subject, but throughout all courses there is a mix of assessment methods such as practical exercises, oral and listening tests, projects and written examinations. Examinations are held in June and November each year with results issued in August and February respectively. Subjects are graded A through G, with A grade awarded for the highest level of achievement and G for the lowest.
Further information on the Cambridge IGCSE curriculum and system may be obtained from ICE’s website: www.cie.org.uk.
