Counselling

We all understand that just as the five fingers of the hand are not alike, children are different from one another in terms of their learning abilities, understanding, reading, writing etc. Some children may even be suffering from dyslexia, dyscalculia, autism etc, each of which creates severe learning problems. As a result, it becomes difficult for these children to cope with the school curriculum. These disabilities also come in the way of their socialising and social adjustment.

Both teachers and parents, when they encounter slow learning or abnormal behaviour in their children, are baffled and are at a loss as to what they should do. The only person who can help all three, i.e. the student, the teacher and the parent, is a trained ‘Counsellor’. The counsellor knows the causes of the problems and how to tackle them with the right attitude and approach based on a sound understanding of the child’s psychology.

Kohinoor International School recognizes that counselling is an important part of today’s educational process and that it is a specialised skill of helping children, parents and teachers through discussions to cope with specific situations and take right decisions. The counsellor does this by listening attentively without passing any judgements and gives the counselled the opportunity to explore, discover and pin-point how and why he feels the way he does. This enables the counselled to make choices and decisions that he was incapable of doing earlier.

In certain cases, the counsellor may even send the child for psychometric tests at a Psychological Center and depending on the test outcome, advise special treatment for the child through ‘remedial sessions’ by special educators outside the school, which will have to be arranged for by the parent at own cost and responsibility.

Kohinoor International School plans to have available a counsellor at the school who will render counselling services to all those children, parents and teachers who need them. The counsellor will act as a catalyst in providing a conducive environment for the children’s growth and development. He/she will help students to understand and deal with their social, behavioural and personal problems through developing their life coping skills. This will enhance their personal, social and academic growth. The counsellor will work with the students individually, in small groups or with the entire class.
